FRANKLINVILLE MAN WAS A TRUE VALENTINE
by Joan C. Wilson
Franklinville Town Historian

Valentine Reimann was born in Windenheim, Prussia, on March 26, 1828. His parents emigrated to the United States (an ocean journey which took over three months) when he was a lad of but 11 years and settled in Buffalo, N.Y.
On Christmas Eve, 1851, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Madden Lawrence, of Milo, Yates County, N.Y. About the year 1858 he went to Greewood, Steuben County.
Over the next 40 years he engaged in the mercantile business, four times represented his town as supervisor, and for several years was the postmaster of that village. Valentine Reimann also served in the War of the Rebellion. In their old age, the couple came to Franklinville to make their home with their son Edward.
A newspaper published in Franklinville carried the following small item in its Dec. 17th, 1901 issue: "Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Reimann celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage at the home of their son, E. J. Reimann, in this village Tuesday afternoon. The occasion was most pleasant for the 30 or so guests present. Several handsome gifts were left the respected couple as reminders of the event."
Two years later, in November of 1903, Valentine and his wife died within two days of each other. But the legacy of love and service they had created continued.
Edward J. Reimann was at that time a well respected practicing pharmacist in Franklinville. He had married Dora Jackson on Jan. 23, 1889. In 1892 Edward and Dora had a son, Leo E. Reimann. His birth was attended by an uncle, Dr. Clarence King, who signed the newborn's birth certificate. The Edward J. Reimanns also celebrated 50 years of marriage before Dora's death.
Leo E. Reimann grew up to be a physician and surgeon. He served overseas in World War I as battalion surgeon in the regular Army. He married, but he and his wife, the former Mildred Elizabeth Smith, never had any children. He began his practice of medicine in Franklinville in 1920. He was on staff at Olean General Hospital for 39 years and was chief of staff for some of those years. He and Robert Peale, M.D. often operated as a team.
In 1944 Dr. Clarence King died. His death certificate was signed by Leo E. Reimann M.D.
Dr. Leo E. Reimann retired in November of 1959 from the practice of medicine due to ill health; he died June 28, 1960. His friend, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, came to conduct his funeral.
Dr. Peale's opening words at the service were "When we are born, we are born into loving arms."

Notes for Jacob Reimann:

--In Memoriam--
The Directors of the Buffalo Commercial Commercial Insurance Company desire to express their sense of the loss they have sustained in the death of one of their fellow directors, Jacob Reimann, which occured at his residence No. 1176 Main Street in this city on the 23rd of May 1899 and their appreciation of his life and labors.
Jacob Reimann was born in Windesheim, Rheinish Prussia, May 6th, 1830. He came to Buffalo, when a mere lad in 1844 and learned the carpenter trade with Mr. Stephen Walker on Washington Street. In 1862 he succeeded to the business carried on by Mr. Walker and has ever since been one of the prominent builders of this city.
Mr. Reimann was twice married and leaves a widow and five sons and two daughters to mourn his loss.
Mr. Reimann was a man of exemplary habits, up-right character, untiring energy and kindly heart. He was an ideal citizen, husband, father, friend and neighbor. He never sought or held any public office. He was emphatically a home man. He found time however to give expression to the kindly sentiments of his nature in his assistance in directing the affairs of the St. John's Orphans' Home of this city, of which institution he was treasurer for thirty- four years, from the time of its organization to his last illness. He devoted much of his time and care to the orphans who were fortunate enough to find lodgement in this Orphans' Home.
In our dealings with him we have known him as an honest, careful, prudent man, a kind friend, a safe advisor and a competent director.
In his last long illness, Mr. Reimann was a great sufferer, but he endured his suffering with patient trustfullness. We shall miss him from our meeting and out business life.
We tender to his widow and children our heart-felt sympathy and we rejoice that he has left to them the precious legacy of a good name.
RESOLVED that as a mark of the respect in which we held him that we do attend the funeral in a body and that we send to the widow and family a copy of these resolutions, which we hereby direct to be engrossed upon our minutes.

Notes for Hobert Ansteth Reimann:

HOBART REIMANN, Medical Professor
Dr. Hobart A. Reimann, 88, professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College and Hahnemann University School of Medicine and researcher of colds and viruses, died Saturday at his home in Wynnewood.
Dr. Reimann, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., earned his medical degree at the University of Buffalo. He became the Magee Professor of Medicine at Jefferson in 1936 after studying and teaching in New York, Czechoslovakia and China. He eventually became chairman of the medical college at Jefferson and succeeded in expanding the department of medicine and initiating its first residency program during the Depression.
In 1960, Dr. Reimann was appointed professor of medicine at Hahnemann.
The training of new physicians was something the doctor considered one of his lasting contributions to medicine. "I am pleased to have been an efficient pedagogue," Dr. Reimann once said.
In addition to the training of new doctors, Dr. Reimann also devoted much of his career to the study of viruses. In the late 1940s, he was considered one of the country's leading authorities on the common cold and other viruses. His ideas on the treatment of colds were adopted by the American Medical Association.
In an article for the Association, he scoffed at the common folk remedies for colds such as drinking hot tea and lemon juice, saying it only increased a patient's discomfort.
Instead, Dr. Reimann recommended what is still prescribed by many doctors: rest.
In 1967, Dr. Reimann traveled to Vietnam to organize the medical school at the University of Saigon. His trip was sponsored by the Agency for International Development and the American Medical Association.
Traveling and teaching abroad was nothing new for Dr. Reimann. Earlier in his career, the doctor had fought a cholera epidemic in China under the sponsorship of the United Nations, and he taught in Lebanon, Iran and Indonesia.
He was the author of numerous medical publications and is credited with being the first to describe viral pneumonia and viral dysentery.
Dr. Reimann was also an accomplished artist whose paintings were shown at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Philadelphia Country Club House and the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, the former Cecilia Demise; his sons, George and William, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow at Chadwick Funeral Home, Athens Avenue and Simpson Road, Ardmore. Burial will be private.
The family has requested that donations be made to the alumni funds at either Jefferson or Hahnemann medical colleges.

In May, 1936 he opened an additional office in Olean in partnership with Dr. J. E. K. Morris under the name and style of Morris & Reimann. Dr. Morris died in January of 1939 at the age of 83, ending that partnership.
Dr. Reimann continued his practice from his home on Pine Street in Franklinville where he lived with his wife, the former Mildred Elizabeth Smith. He was on staff at the Olean General Hospital for 39 years and for some of those years was Chief of Staff. He was County Physician for the Cattaraugus County Home in Machias for many years, retiring in 1959.
Dr. Reimann's surgical partner for many years was Dr. Robert Peale of Olean, N.Y., brother of the late Rev. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.
Beginning in the 1940s the Reimanns maintained a country home on Pigeon Hill which he built. In addition to his medical career, Dr. Reimann was an artist of considerable talent, an archery enthusiast, a photographer of professional quality, raised and showed cocker and springer spaniel dogs, and traveled extensively.
During his final illness he was cared for by round the clock nurses in a bedroom set up for the purpose in one of the rooms of his office suite in his home. There he died on the morning of June 28, 1960. His funeral was conducted by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and he is buried in Mount Prospect Cemetery.
